Brainstorming: Initial Ideas

Age Group Below 11

• Children’s Web Quest : A software application that enables a web quest. In order to help children to develop their skills in searching and browsing the Internet, this application will guide young children in treasure hunting over the web, where the treasure is the information. The application will have all the features to be appealing, interesting and educational.

Children’s Learning: This game will be centered on very young age groups. The idea is to provide children with a visual environment where pictures of animals and places will be displayed on a touch screen , the children will be able to select a picture and learn more, by video or sound, relating to their chosen subject.

Age Group Above 60

Simple and easy to use Cooker: A basic and simple cooker, that will provide the elderly with easy features, nothing complicated. The cooker will provide the elderly with all the basic features that a modern cooker would have, as well as features that will make their life easier.

Simple Oven: Again a basic and simple oven, providing all the basic features of modern ovens, as well as considering in its design the difficulties and disabilities that elderly people could face.

Wheelchair: A low-cost, durable, and flexible wheelchair that will overcome many of the obstacles that the elderly people, that suffer from movement disabilities have to face in their everyday lives.

Brainwheels: A wheelchair that will be able to assist in navigation during movement, so that the person using it will not have to navigate it in great detail, but rather giving the general navigation stigma. The wheelchair will use sensors to avoid obstacles, or making decisions such as to accelerate or decelerate, according to the situation. This will give the user more flexibility and speed. This mode can be disabled according to the user's wish.

Interactive Instruction Book: Contemporary consumer electronics such as DVD players, set-top-boxes, televisions and stereos can be challenging and frustrating to operate. A simple task such as watching a DVD can involve several, unintuitive steps such as switching on the player, selecting the correct TV/stereo inputs and navigating DVD menus. The interactive 'tablet' would break down these process into a series of task orientated steps which can be easily followed. A built in infra-red transmitter can be used to control devices directly from the tablet using an on-screen virtual remote. The tablet will be supplied with an extensive database of supported products and will be highly extensible via Internet updates.

Automatic Pet Feeding Machine: This product will help people who forget easily (especially old people) to keep a schedule when feeding their favourite pets, so that they do not skip feeding times, or even not overdoing it by giving their pets more food than needed. This machine will take care of giving to their pet the right amount of food, at the right time.

Automatic Secateurs: This tool will provide assistant to the people that like gardening but find it very difficult to cut off branches and prune bushes and trees, due to the strength it requires to do so. Some people, such as old people, don’t have the strength anymore. These automatic secateurs will take care of this hard task for them. All it takes is the user to attach it at the specific point that he/she wishes to cut, and switch it on. This tool will be electronic and will have safety features.

Talking Watch: This is an idea added after our first brainstorming ended, but still we thought it was a good idea to include it in our set of initial ideas. A watch can tell the time using speech features, by pressing a button. Although it will display the time in large digital numbers, the speech feature will help the elderly with poor vision as well. Also it will work as a reminder for medication dosage, and it will be used as a small pocket for carrying pills. At the same time it will have the name and address of the carrier written on the inside, so that if something happens to him/her then other people around can provide assistance. This can be proved to be quite useful to people with health problems and poor memory

E-Book previewer: Another idea that came up during the discussion, is the designing of an e-book previewer, that will assist people with poor vision to read through their favorite books. It will have the looks and feels of a traditional book, but inside it will have two screens that will display the book pages. The user will be able to choose the font size and the brightness of the screen through easy to use buttons, and he/she will be able to move forward and backwards through the book pages. It will operate using rechargeable batteries. However, in order to read a book, it will be required to have it as an e-book.
